Music Department
Introduction
The Music Department is led by Ms. Shukura Nambwere who ensures that students receive both classical grounding and modern creativity. Under her leadership, the department continues to expand its ensembles, outreach activities, and collaborations with other departments.
How Can we Define Music? Music is a universal language that connects people across time and culture. From the grand concert halls of Europe to the vibrant rhythms of Africa, music has shaped societies and inspired generations. Europe gave us legendary names like Johann Sebastian Bach, Ludwig van Beethoven, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and Johannes Brahms , musicians whose works remain the backbone of classical training. As Bach beautifully said, “The aim and final end of all music should be none other than the glory of God and the refreshment of the soul.”
Africa, on the other hand, has given the world rhythms and voices that can never be forgotten. Think of Miriam Makeba from South Africa, who used her music as a voice for freedom, Fela Kuti of Nigeria, who revolutionized Afrobeat, or Uganda’s own Philly Lutaaya, whose songs still carry messages of hope and resilience. Together, these artists show that music is not just art , it is power, culture, and identity. That same spirit of creativity and purpose is what drives the Music Department at IMLS.
IMLS Music Department
The Music Department is the heartbeat of the International School of Music, Languages & Polytechnic Studies (IMLS).
It is the foundation and mother of our other departments because music builds discipline, teamwork, creativity,
and communication.
At IMLS, music is lived—practiced, performed, and shared. Whether a learner dreams of becoming a professional musician,
a teacher, or wants to grow creatively, the department provides an environment for growth.
We offer structured training through two pathways:
Certificate in Music (2 years):
A beginner program that introduces music theory, an instrument or voice, choir participation,
and basic studio production.
National Diploma in Music (2 years):
An advanced course covering performance, arranging, teaching skills, music history, and production.
Learners take part in recitals, recordings, and final projects for professional readiness.
The IMLS Brass Band is a vibrant and disciplined ensemble, known for its powerful performances at school and community events. It unites students from diverse backgrounds and study programs, creating a space where music brings everyone together.
The IMLS Choir is a dynamic group that unites Students passionate about singing, from beginners to trained vocalists. It emphasizes teamwork, discipline, and musical growth, performing a wide range of repertoire at institute events and community functions, while also serving as a pathway to solo or professional music opportunities.
At IMLS, a troupe is a talented group of performers who express creativity through music, dance, and drama. Our troupes showcase the artistic skills of our students and inspire others through vibrant performances and cultural expression.
At IMLS, learners are taught a wide range of musical instruments to suit diverse interests and talents. These include string instruments such as the violin, cello, and guitar; wind instruments like the saxophone, flute, trumpet, and clarinet; keyboard instruments including the piano and accordion; as well as traditional instruments and various drums and percussion. This variety allows students to explore different sounds, styles, and musical expressions.
